Spa Pool at dawn, Hammersley Gorge, Karijini National Park. Karijini Photo Tour with Adam Monk

The Karijini Wilderness Photography Plan.

Karijini is a vast wilderness area in the Hamersley Ranges of Western Australia’s Pilbara Region. The park is approximately 1400km North of Perth and spans an area greater than 6,270km2, most of which is virtually inaccessible.

The part of Karijini that is accessible has probably the highest density of spectacular canyons and waterfalls of anywhere in the world and would have to be amongst Australia’s top most stunning locations. For sheer incredible raw beauty, Karijini really packs a punch and is an awesome location for photographers.

Why come to Karijini with us?

Even though Karijini is isolated, it is relatively easy to access. You can fly from any major Australian capital city to Paraburdoo Airport, hire a car and drive in. In the park you can get accomodation at the Eco Retreat and eat all your meals there.

Karijini has a handful of spectacular gorges, with lots of information available from the tourist info centre in the park, you can drive to them all easily and make your way up and down easily without any help. Thousands of people do just that every year, so why would you come on one of our photo tours to Karijini?

It’s all about the Light!

What we specialise in is obviously landscape photography skills and mentoring, but also extensive knowledge of all the amazing locations the park has to offer and when to be there. The gorges twist and turn in every direction, light changes throughout the day and sunlight in gorges is rarely the photographer’s friend.

Some locations are stunning in the morning, others in the evening and we know all these locations intimately, even to the point of how the light changes in each location at different times of the year.

Couple that with Adam’s decades of experience as both a full time professional photographer, photography coach and mentor, and you begin to see the real value in this tour. We aim to not just get you to the locations in the great light, but to help expand your vision and inspire you to new heights of creativity, whatever your level of photography.

This tour is the perfect way to immerse yourself in the ethereal beauty of nature in Karijini, see this world in new and exciting ways and deepen your understanding. We aim to take your photography to a whole new level.

We do things a bit differently

This is no holiday though, you will be out in the gorges very early every morning. It’s all optional of course, you can sleep in any day you like and the rest of the group will meet you for breakfast on our way back from the morning shoot. We doubt you will want to sleep in, not with the places we will be showing you and the images you will be making.

Karijini Photo Tour – The Plan

Each morning will begin very early when we pick you up from your Eco Tent and take you to another incredible location. We shoot for a few hours through the magic early morning light before returning to the Eco Retreat for a hearty cooked breakfast. If we are headed further out for the morning we will take a packed breakfast with us.

Early morning shoot

After breakfast we usually get the Eco Retreat restaurant area to ourselves as the crowd head off to the gorges for the hotter brightly sunlit part of the day. We take that opportunity to freshen up then grab our computers to download images and do some post processing with a lovely cup of hot coffee or tea.

Workshops & Lunch

We also use this time to run small informal workshops in everything from shooting techniques to filters or processing of images. The group is only ever a maximum of 4 people, so there is plenty of room to tailor the learning to each member.

This trip is all about you, your images and learning at your pace. Adam doesn’t shoot at all on this tour, rather his time is entirely devoted to ensuring you get the images. You will never need to compete with Adam for the best shooting location or the magic vanishing light.

After the mornings processing we have lunch right where we are at the Eco Retreat just before the lunchtime rush as the crowds return from their days adventures. We then go off for a bit of a rest before the afternoons activities begin.

Afternoon light & evening magic hour

Around 3pm we meet up again and head back into the park for the afternoon and evening light and some more stunning locations, all carefully chosen by Adam to suit the time of day and the nature and angle of the light.

This is not a trekking tour, but we will be doing lots of scenic walks through stunning places, with some steep descents into the gorges followed by hot showers, fabulous meals and a comfortable bed.

All the important tour details

How was this tour designed?

An itinerary created by a photographer for photographers

This itinerary has been researched and created by Adam by going to these places and extensively walking through and photographing each and every location multiple times over many years.

It’s not just about arriving in beautiful places, Karijini is full of those, it’s about being there at the right time for the best light, understanding the weather and being prepared with alternate locations that best suit the day.

This all takes experience, understanding and practical research, something that can’t be done from behind a desk. Adam has been travelling to Karijini and extensively walking and photographing the park for many years so he knows the gorges intimately and what timing is best for each location.

How many are in the tour group?

A Tour group so small it’s practically a private tour

Our group size for this Karijini photo tour is  just 4 people, plus Adam.  4 is a small intimate group size that works so well for the wilderness nature of this tour, especially in the confined gorges of Karijini.

The last thing you want in one of the magical canyons is to be there with a big group of photographers all jostling for the prime spot. Any more than 4 in here is a big group, unwieldy and distracting.

This trip is about you getting seriously great shots, Adam doesn’t even carry a camera on this tour, so you won’t be competing with the tutor for the best shooting angles.

Whats Included?

No hidden extras.

There are no hidden extras on this Karijini Photo tour, no meals that are not covered or nights you have to find your own Hotel.

This tour begins and ends at the Paraburdoo airport where we pick you up after your flight in our comfy new 4WD and where we drop you off at the end.

We do all the driving and the arranging, all you have to do is relax and enjoy.

The only extras not covered are alcohol, snacks or coffees (yes they do have great coffee at Karijini Eco Retreat) you may want along the way.

Transport on Tour

Travelling in style – by car – We drive, you relax

Our transport for this photo tour is a comfortable roomy, custom modified Toyota Landcruiser, driven by Adam (who is specially licensed to drive tour vehicles).

There is plenty of room to stretch the legs and for the all important camera gear.  There are lots of early morning and late afternoon shoots (followed by a great meal and a hot shower), but you never have to worry about logistics or driving.

This trip its all about the enjoyment of being there and getting the perfect shots.

Accomodation

A tent that is not really a tent

For the duration of this photography adventure we stay at the Karijini Eco Retreat in the Eco Safari Tents.

The Safari Tents are a cross between a tent and a hotel room, they have canvas walls, timber floors and a king sized bed or two single beds.

They also have electric lights and a private en-suite bathroom with hot water. There is no air conditioning but the tents do have large doors and windows that can be rolled up for fresh air ventilation.

All the doors and windows have bug screens to ensure trouble free, bug free sleep. Calling them Luxury is a bit of a stretch, but they are certainly very comfortable.

Meals

Food glorious food!

Karijini Eco Retreat restaurant seating

All your meals are included on this Karijini photo tour, from Dinner on the first day after we pick you up at the airport, to breakfast on the final day before we drop you off.

The majority of our meals we will eat at the The Karijini Eco retreat restaurant, or we sometimes take a picnic breakfast or lunch to more remote locations when we won’t be back in time for meals.

The Karijini Eco retreat restaurant stands out in the outback regions of Australia in that the food is actually very good!

The restaurant has a well stocked bar for the evenings, and is a great place to unwind with a glass of wine at the end of a long day.

Pre tour preparations

How do you know what to expect and what to bring?

The best way to ensure you enjoy this Photo Tour adventure to Karijini is to be fully prepared before you leave. “What weather should I expect, what clothes are appropriate for the climate? How is the tour organised and what about my camera gear?“

All these and just about any other questions you can think of are clearly answered in the pre trip notes, which is currently an easy to follow 20 page e-book, with everything under major headings and in point form.

If you have questions after reading the notes Adam is happy to help out via email or over the phone. We usually like to have a chat or two with each participant prior to departure.

The better prepared you are the more fun you will have and then the more fun we will have.

Is this Karijini photo tour right for you?

This photo tour is for anyone with a love of wild untamed places and a keen interest in wilderness photography.  It doesn’t matter if you are a seasoned professional or a complete beginner, all levels of photographer are welcomed, in fact the diverse experience of the group is an integral part of what makes it so much fun.  The only qualification required to go on this photo tour is a love of the wilderness and stunning isolated places and to be steady on your feet (see below).

Physical fitness

Karijini is a remote wilderness location full of raw wild beauty. The paths trails and stairs are natural and quite rustic, and there are some steep descents into gorges over uneven rocky ground. You will need to be reasonably fit and you must have good balance, all whilst carrying your own camera gear.

If you are shaky on your feet or can’t comfortably walk on uneven ground then this tour is probably not for you. If in doubt please call Adam before booking and we can discuss options. +61-415 854 179 or tours@adammonk.com

What about non photographers?

Non photographers are very welcome on this photo tour, either as a partner of a keen photographer, or simply as somebody who appreciates the slower more considered pace this photography tour provides.

Obviously you will have to work within the photography schedule, which for this trip involves lots of early mornings, and be prepared to find yourself in breathtakingly beautiful places.

Also don’t be surprised if you find yourself smitten by the photography bug.  A few days of hanging out with mad keen photographers will do that.

Jofre Gorge evening twilight, Karijini National Park. Adam Monk Photo tour of Karijini

What is the age group here?

The age group for this Karijini photo tour can be very diverse, from 28 years old to 85 years old fits just fine. what is more important is your physical fitness, mobility and balance (See notes above).

Photography is one thing that is not limited by how old you are, you simply adjust the way you shoot. At 25 you may want to hang out of a tree (we don’t recommend this) to get the perfect shot, but at 50 that shouldn’t seem like such a good idea any more. That doesn’t mean you won’t get that perfect shot though, your way of seeing has just matured like a fine wine.

We have a comfortable bed and hot showers every night on this photo tour, the food is excellent and plentiful and the scenery is superb. If you are anything like us, good food, a hot shower and a good nights sleep mean the difference between feeling like 25 years old or 100.

Photography Tuition & priorities

This photo tour is about you, plain and simple. Our focus is to get you to the best spots in the best light and to make sure you have the level of assistance and learning you want. With only 4 participants and with Adam not shooting at all (Why Not?) there will be plenty of opportunity for you to grow and learn at your own pace.

4 participants on a tour in a narrow canyon shooting the rapidly changing light is optimal. Nobody gets in the way and everyone gets their shots without pressure or hurrying. Adam will get you to the locations with plenty of time to explore, enjoy and shoot, because after all, being in these stunning locations with the magic light is the point, the images are the bonus you take away.

Your camera gear.

There is really no limit to what camera gear you take other than your ability to carry it. Everything from Digital SLRs, professional and consumer, simple point and shoot cameras, even medium format digital and film or your iPhone.

What ever level of camera equipment you have, we will ensure you get the most out of it, after all, it’s great photographers who make great images, not great cameras!

After you book your place on the tour we will send you a comprehensive recommended gear and packing list. Adam is always happy to discuss the camera gear you have and how to make it work best for you.

Dales Gorge Snappy Gums, Karijini NP. Adam Monk Karijini Photo Tour

Photography & Lightroom E-Books to keep

In the months leading up to the tour we will send you out all the information you will need to prepare for the adventure ahead. This includes several comprehensive E-Books on Photography techniques & workflow, plus an in depth guide to using Lightroom to manage and edit your images.

During the tour Adam will be running informal workshops on many photography topics, and will use Lightroom (and Capture One) to demonstrate many post processing tricks and techniques.

These E-Books help cement this knowledge and are yours to keep as a reference even after the tour is finished.

Custom made Karijini Lightroom catalogue

We will also send you a fully functional Lightroom catalogue (you will need to have Lightroom software) with a complete set of Karijini Keywords and Smart Collections already loaded. Since keywording is rather boring (don’t worry, we will show you some tricks to make is quick and simple) this makes the job much easier so you can get on with the fun stuff.

Even if you already have a Lightroom catalogue, it’s easy to merge multiple catalogues together, and how to achieve this is explained in the Lightroom E-Book.

What about Capture One?

Don’t worry if you use Capture One instead of Lightroom, we also give you the keyword list separately, so you can import it directly into Capture One.

Adam has been using Capture One extensively for many years, so he can help you with this too.

Your Photo mentor & Guide – Adam Monk

Photo tour leader Adam Monk Portrait

Adam is a professional landscape and travel photographer with a longstanding passion for the natural environment, he has been traveling and photographing the World’s wild places for over 35 years and the enthusiasm just continues to grow.  Adam has made many extensive trips through Karijini over the years, and has run many workshops and tours there during this time, helping keen photographers realise stunning images of the sheer majesty and beauty of this incredible place.

A Kingswood and an old camera

Adam’s experience of landscape photography stretches back a lifetime to his first trip around Australia in an old Holden Kingswood sedan (Iconic Australian car), a swag (Iconic Australian camp bed) and a collection of ancient small and large format film cameras. That Kingswood went many places that a Kingswood is not meant to go, but the stunning scenery was worth it and neither Adam nor the Kingswood ever regretted it.

Now things are a bit more comfortable, with a new(ish) 4WD and an offroad camper trailer with an actual bed, modern medium format digital cameras and GPS navigation. But the sense of wonder at the World’s wild and beautiful places has never waned and sharing that magical world with other photographers is one of his greatest pleasures.

Landscape images Gallery

For over 13 years Adam ran his own landscape gallery in the historic port city of Fremantle, Western Australia, and his landscape images now grace the walls of thousands of homes and offices the world over. These images show a small slice of the wonder and beauty of the natural world and hopefully remind viewers where we come from and what’s truly important.

In 2018 Adam moved the landscape images business completely online and shut the doors to the gallery, allowing him to focus full time on photography tours that had been a growing part of his business for the previous 12 years. Since then he has organised and run many photography workshops and photo tours to some of the worlds most wild and beautiful places such as The Kimberley (Coming again soon), The Pilbara (Karijini NP), Tasmania, Iceland, Greenland, Japan, Bhutan and Cambodia. To date Adam has run more than 40 successful dedicated photography tours… and still counting…
